How do donor-advised funds work?

DAFs can be easily set up through your financial institution or a community foundation to serve as a flexible charitable giving vehicle. For more information on how to establish a DAF, contact your community foundation or financial advisor.

What is a donor-advised fund (DAF)?

A donor-advised fund (DAF) is a philanthropic giving vehicle like a charitable savings account. It provides an immediate tax benefit to you, and allows you to easily support DKT and other charities of your choice over time. Generally, you can invest cash and appreciated securities, as well as other assets that DKT may not be able to accept as a direct gift.

Why are donor-advised funds used?

A donor-advised fund is a great option because: 

  • It’s easy to turn your portfolio into an impactful gift to save lives.

  • It eliminates capital gains on donated stock. Giving accounts have the potential to grow, possibly providing additional funding when you are ready to make a gift.

  • You can make recurring gifts with ease, helping us to be prepared for the next emergency.

  • You can quickly put your charitable dollars into action to respond to emergencies and disasters with an immediate grant.

Make a planned gift to DKT in your will

Gifting funds to DKT by will is one way to sustain your commitment to reproductive health and rights for years to come. When making a planned gift, you may leave: 

  • A stated dollar amount;
  • A percentage of your residual estate, i.e. what remains in your estate after gifts to loved ones and expenses have been paid;
  • Liquid assets.


This process is as simple as including the following language in your will: 

“I give and bequeath to DKT International, 1001 Connecticut Ave NW #800, Washington, DC 20036 [ _____ Dollars ($____)] [____ % of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate], to be used for its general charitable purposes.”

By designating your planned gift as unrestricted, your funding will provide support where it is needed most. 

Consider naming DKT as a beneficiary 

You can name DKT International as a beneficiary on your retirement account, life insurance policy, or bank or investment accounts. When you designate DKT International as a beneficiary, the gift passes directly to DKT International without going through the probate process. That means it moves quickly to where it’s needed most: supporting our work in over 100 countries.   

Ask your financial institution for a change of beneficiary form.
