DKT Egypt opened its doors in 2004 to fill a gap in Egypt’s private sector by providing high-quality, low-cost contraceptives.
DKT offers 5 types of IUDs and is the primary provider of IUDs to both the public and private sector. We recently collaborated with the Ministry of Health to deliver contraceptives to 500,000 women living in slums of the El-Sharkia governorate. Of these women, 62,000 were new users. DKT Egypt also provides vaginal foaming tablets and male condoms.
Although the DKT team is small, we are able to distribute across the country. We currently provide contraceptives to 3,000 gynecologists and 10,000 pharmacies.
DKT Egypt has a robust training program, and recently began training providers on the injectable contraceptive Sayana Press, which we recently introduced in Egypt. We provide IUD insertion training sessions for health care providers in hospitals.
DKT Egypt tailors its demand creation campaigns to reach specific demographic groups. Our “Aman” campaign of 2016 was developed to reach poor and hard-to-reach women with messages about contraception, as well as reaching out to less educated women through social media. We create youth-friendly radio, television and social media advertisements to reach young people who might otherwise not have access to sexual health information.
Currently only about 7% of Egyptian women are familiar with emergency contraception. To address this, we launched a bilingual website in tandem with a social media campaign called “Be Sure, Be Confident” to inform women of this option.
In 2016, DKT Egypt generated 2.4 million couple years of protection.
