December 2015 Newsletter

Dear Friend of DKT,

Reflecting on the past year, we have much to be proud of here at DKT. In Myanmar, DKT started the social marketing of contraceptives, leveraging digital media to engage young people with information about family planning. In Tanzania, we opened several DKT clinics as well as more than fifteen franchises, alongside our social marketing work. We have laid the groundwork for similar activities in Francophone West Africa and expect to see results there in early 2016. We’ve introduced innovative products like Sayana Press in the DRC. And we are trying out some new ideas to provide clinical services at churches and mosques in Nigeria.

2015 has been a year where we also look ahead, strategizing how to significantly increase DKT’s health impact in the coming five years. We are passionate about what we can achieve together. More on that below.

I look forward to working with many of you in the year ahead. As always, we are grateful for your interest in and support of DKT. I hope you enjoy this final newsletter of 2015.

Cheers,

Christopher Purdy

President

DKT in the news

DKT enjoyed welcome media coverage of its activities in 2015. Most recently, a Huffington Post Blog article featured the top social marketing programs in 2014. We are happy that a number of DKT International’s programs rank among the top 10, including Indonesia, Ethiopia, Philippines, Egypt and Ghana. DKT was also featured last month in Inside Philanthropy. The article highlighted DKT’s thinking on innovative financing approaches, based on cross-subsidization and risk taking.

DKT’s road ahead toward 2020

We anticipate delivering over 29 million CYPs in 2015, our best year ever. Over the next 5 years, DKT is committed to helping increase contraceptive use by 2020. To that end, DKT endeavors to reach 50 million couples. As we translate this vision to reality, DKT will rely on geographic, programmatic and product expansion, improving financial sustainability, investing in our brands, and leveraging DKT’s culture to focus on results.

Over the next 5 years, DKT plans to expand to ensure that family planning services are available to those that need them the most.

Bringing family planning services to convenient locations in Nigeria

DKT Nigeria launched a new program in 2015 that aims to improve access to and provision of long acting and reversible contraceptives.

In 2015, DKT Nigeria launched a program to increase access to and provision of long acting and reversible contraceptives in Lagos. The program is supported by DKT International and provided free family planning services to 2,000 women, 66% of whom are first-time users of modern contraceptives. This program focuses on convenience and accessibility, creating pop-up clinics in workplaces, churches, mosques, market places, universities and police barracks. DKT Nigeria is encouraged by results to date and expects to provide 650,000 CYPs by 2018.

Commitment to safe abortion

DKT is committed to closing the gap on  unmet need so that all pregnancies are wanted and, when that is not possible, all abortions are safe. As such, DKT sells and provides a number of products to ensure that safe abortion is possible, including MVA kits, misoprostol and mifepristone/misoprostol combi packs. In 2015, DKT has sold over 1.7 million mifepristone/ misoprostol tablets, 4.4 million misoprostol tablets, and 10,000 Manual Vacuum Aspiration (MVA) kits. We believe that providing affordable, safe abortion to women worldwide will result in reduced maternal mortality.
