May/June 2025 Newsletter

Dear Friend of DKT,

In case you missed it, there’s still time to check out DKT’s 2025 Annual Report.  It’s a mercifully short read (4 pages!) and highlights DKT’s main achievements and the massive impact we are having around the world.  We invite questions and comments.

This month, we share DKT’s commitment to sustainability, including the scaling up of access to long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs), and carafem expanding access to safe abortion care in the United States.

DKT achieves sustainable programming through our efficient operational model—maintaining headquarters costs below 2% of expenses, implementing smart cost-recovery strategies, and offering products at varied price points to serve women and families at all income levels. While our sustainable approach minimizes donor dependence, donor investment remains vital to expanding our reproductive health services worldwide.

Donor support is critical for DKT to reach 100 million couples with one year of pregnancy protection by 2030. While DKT’s sales revenues finance the majority of our operational costs, we still rely on critical donor support to fund key initiatives like last-mile delivery, healthcare provider training and maintaining equitable access across income levels.

As DKT teams scale up access around the world, carafem is improving abortion care in the U.S. With online care offered in 18 states and Washington, DC, and in-person care offered in Atlanta, Chicago, and Washington, DC, carafem is shaping the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) landscape in the U.S.. We’re proud to spotlight their newly upgraded website, where you can learn more about their work and how to access quality SRH care.

We appreciate your support and partnership.

Best,

Chris Purdy

DKT’s model of sustainability

Since 1989, DKT’s sustainability model has revolutionized global reproductive health by bringing private sector efficiency to drive public health impact. We grow financially sustainable programs while keeping high-quality products affordable to families in developing countries.

Several DKT programs, such as DKT Indonesia, are 100% financially sustainable and even remit revenues to support DKT programs in lower income markets. First established in 1996, DKT Indonesia is now the world’s largest contraceptive social marketing program, delivering more than 10 million CYPs each year with no donor support.

Nonetheless, donor investment is crucial to the scaling up of certain methods, such as LARCs, which include IUDs and hormonal implants. From 2010 to 2021, DKT received a large donor investment that led to a significant increase in access to LARCs across dozens of countries. Due to our sustainable business model and large-scale LARC sales and distribution, DKT maintained steady product sales after the donor investment ended in 2021.  In 2024, DKT sold over 6 million IUDs and over 2 million implants.

DKT DRC continues to increase modern contraceptive use, alleviate environmental pressure, and empower girls in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

DKT DRC is proud to announce the renewal of the PROMIS project, Programme de Mise à l’Échelle de la Planification Familiale (Program to Scale-up Family Planning), funded by the Central African Forest Initiative through Fonaredd. Implemented by a consortium including iNGOs Tulane UniversityUNOPSMSI, and local NGOs SANRU and ABEF, PROMIS aims to reduce poverty and ease pressure on environmental resources by expanding access to modern contraceptive methods in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Over the next four years, PROMIS II will deliver 10 million couple years of protection (CYPs)—up from 7 million in the first phase—by strengthening both the supply of and demand for family planning services, particularly at the community level. The project will also support the resilience of local health systems to ensure long-term access to sexual and reproductive health services, with a focus on reaching the most vulnerable and underserved populations. In addition, PROMIS II will invest in girls’ education by promoting retention in secondary and university education and supporting access to post-secondary studies and state diplomas.

The second phase will expand from 11 to 12 provinces: Bas Uele, Haut Katanga, Ituri, Kasai Oriental, Kinshasa, Kongo Central, Kwilu, Lualaba, Nord Kivu, Sud Kivu, Tshopo, and now Equateur.

By promoting access to contraception and SRH education, PROMIS II will empower women and girls, reduce poverty, strengthen health systems, and support environmental sustainability across the DRC.
