Social Marketing Statistics July 2013

Dear Friends,

We are pleased to announce the publication of the 2012 contraceptive social marketing statistics, available here along with comparable statistics dating back to 1991. For those who want hard copies, we will be happy to respond to your requests (no charge).

2012 was another record-breaking year for social marketing worldwide. A few highlights:

  • 87 programs in 65 countries provided more than 65 million couple years of protection (CYPs). This means that CSM programs are providing contraceptives to about 6% of all fertile-aged women, married and unmarried, in the developing world (excluding China), about 14% of modern method users, and 24% of spacing method users.
  • Programs sold 2.3 billion condoms, nearly 200 million oral contraceptives, and 2.2 million IUDs.
  • Indonesia remains the largest CSM program in the world, delivering 6.3 million CYPs.
  • Cambodia serves 35% of its target market, the highest of any program.
  • 19 programs attained ‘best program’ status, delivering more than 300,000 CYPs and reaching more than 8% of their target markets.

Social marketing continues to be a highly effective way to reach millions of women and men with family planning options. We salute these programs for their efforts.

Sincerely,

Phil Harvey
