I am pleased to share highlights of DKT’s 2016 health impact with you. Using the Marie Stopes International Impact 2 Calculator, we are able to convert our contraceptive sales figures into health impact data. The Impact 2 calculator takes into account current demographic statistics and DKT sales and service delivery data to provide estimates of unsafe abortions, maternal deaths, and pregnancies averted. We are also able to estimate the number of child and infant deaths averted as a result of increased birth spacing. Details of this data by country can be found here.
Globally in 2016, DKT prevented an estimated:
- 6,992,099 unwanted pregnancies
- 14,662 maternal deaths
- 48,278 child deaths
- 4,765,101 unsafe abortions
DKT also religiously tracks the number of Couple Years of Protection (CYPs) provided through our efforts. In 2016, DKT delivered 33 million CYPs, making us one of the largest providers of family planning and safe abortion in the world. This represents our best year yet for health impact-we prevented 27% more unwanted pregnancies and 32% more child deaths compared to 2015.
