The Case for Giving to One of the World’s Most Cost-Effective Global Reproductive Health Organizations

If you’re searching for where your philanthropic dollar goes furthest in global reproductive health — including contraception, safe abortion access, and maternal health — DKT International should be on your radar. We are one of the largest private providers of family planning and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) products and services in the world, operating in more than 100 countries and reaching tens of millions of people each year.
A Different Kind of Global Health Organization
Founded in 1989, DKT International is a nonprofit social enterprise. We use commercial marketing techniques and private-sector distribution networks to make high-quality contraceptives, medical abortion pills, and manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) technology affordable and accessible in markets where they would otherwise not reach. In 2025, DKT self-financed 83% of its operating costs through its own product sales revenues [1] — which means donor dollars go where they are needed most: last-mile communities, conflict-affected regions, and the people most often left behind.
2025 Impact at a Glance
- 70 million couple-years of pregnancy protection (CYPs) generated
- 27.8 million unintended pregnancies averted
- 22.6 million unsafe abortions averted
- 55,400 maternal deaths averted
- 253,600 child deaths averted
- 915,900 healthcare providers trained and detailed
In 2025, DKT procured $147 million in reproductive health commodities — more than 90% financed by our own sales revenues. [1]
Expanding Safe Abortion Access at Scale
DKT is one of the world’s largest providers of safe abortion products, services, and technology. In 2025, DKT supplied: [1]
- 6.5 million mifepristone/misoprostol combipacks for medical abortion
- 31.1 million misoprostol tablets
- 31.1 million MVA cannulae and 274,948 MVA aspirators for post-abortion care and uterine evacuation
Through our affiliate DKT WomanCare, we are the legal manufacturer of the Ipas MVA kit technology and a global supplier of medical abortion pills across 100 countries. [1] Our affiliate Women First Digital delivers confidential digital support for self-managed abortion and contraception in multiple languages, and carafem expands telehealth and abortion-by-mail services across 20 U.S. states and DC. [1]
Why the Model Works — and Why It Matters for Donors
DKT’s social-enterprise model means donor dollars don’t just fund programs — they unlock them. Because DKT self-finances 83% of its costs through sales revenues, every $1 in donor funding is matched by roughly $5 from DKT’s own revenues, turning each donated dollar into approximately $6 of total reproductive health programming. [1] That’s a leverage ratio almost no other global health nonprofit can match.
The result is extraordinary cost-effectiveness. In 2024, DKT delivered a couple-year of pregnancy protection at an average cost of $0.89 [2] — under $1 per couple, per year — down from $2.02 a decade ago.
We also keep U.S. headquarters and fundraising costs below 2% of total expenses, so the vast majority of what donors give goes directly to programs. [1] Your gift is targeted specifically at health equity: mobile clinics, provider training, telehealth platforms, post-abortion care, and demand-creation campaigns in places like Afghanistan, Myanmar, Mozambique, and Chad — markets where traditional approaches fall short.
Behind the Numbers
In Mozambique, a 17-year-old student named Márcia used DKT’s mobile clinic and community outreach to navigate family resistance and access contraception. Today, she’s on track to graduate and become a teacher. In Myanmar, a young couple who once struggled to afford contraception now plans their family on their own terms — and advocates for others in their community to do the same.
This is reproductive health philanthropy at scale: a system of support — contraception, safe abortion, maternal health — that meets people where they are, through channels they trust.
Trusted, Transparent, Accountable
