When Olawunmi Adeyemo and her husband got married, they decided they wanted two children. For a while, everything went according to plan.
Six years ago, they had their first child. Three years later, her second pregnancy produced twins. That wasn’t in the plan.
Olawunmi and her husband decided they needed a long-term contraceptive method to avoid future surprises. She chose DKT’s Lydia IUD and has used it successfully the last two years.
“Two or three months after I had the twins, I started looking for a solution,” she says. “I found out that Lydia IUD is the best one for me, because I don’t like taking injections.”
Olawuni, 32 years old, is a vibrant wife and mother who loves to party and dance. She is active on Instagram and Facebook and uses them to promote her hair and make-up salon in Balogun, Ikeja, the central business district of Lagos, where she also sells cosmetics and weaves. Her husband works in real estate but the jobs come sporadically. In his down time, he helps Olawunmi run her business.
Her dream is for Ola-Boss Makeover, her salon, to be known all over the world. Now that she is free of pregnancy worries, she has a better shot at that dream.
“I complained to my friend who is a nurse that I don’t want to have another baby,” she says. “So she said the best method she knows about is the IUD, the Lydia IUD, and that I should give it a try, and I did.” Olawunmi says her friend told her about the Lydia IUD Instagram account.
”On Instagram, I sent them a DM [direct message] and I got a reply almost immediately. They referred me to a clinic in my area. It was fantastic. I didn’t even know something like that existed in Nigeria. And when I heard about the price (N3,000, or about US $8.00), I was like ‘Are you serious?’ I didn’t believe it at first.”
She also picked up a flyer on Honey & Banana Connect, DKT’s dedicated toll-free family planning call center, at her local pharmacy. She called them and got a detailed explanation of Lydia IUD which helped ally her fears about the cramps and heavy flow she experienced initially. Those side effects have now disappeared.
Olawunmi says the Lydia IUD has changed her life in so many ways.
“Before, oh my God, I was always thinking I might get pregnant. This thing will last for 10 years. You don’t have the fear of “Oh, I have an appointment with my doctor, I have to go and take an injection. Or I have to take this drug in the morning, this and that. If you have any complaint or anything, just call Honey & Banana Connect. It has been fantastic for me and, I think, for other people as well.”
